SI2 Clarity diamonds

The SI2 clarity diamond is one of the best choices, especially when looking for a diamond deal. Finding a great looking SI2 diamond can be easy when you know a few important facts about diamond clarity.

What is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity, one of the “4 C’s” of diamond grading, is a measure of how “clear” or free of inclusions a particular diamond is. The GIA clarity scale defines 11 different grades of clarity.

What Does SI2 Clarity Indicate?

SI2 clarity diamonds have one or more inclusions, and these inclusions are of a size, location, and density that meet the GIA definition of SI2 clarity. Typically, these small inclusions are visible to the eye.

“Good” SI2 Diamonds

Some SI2 diamonds can look great. These “good” SI2 diamonds are relatively uncommon because they have “good” inclusions, which are flaws that are almost invisible to the “naked eye.” This term from the diamond trade means the diamond looks clean when viewed without the assistance of a magnifying loupe or microscope.

What are the Characteristics of a “Good” Inclusion?

A “good” inclusion is:

  • White — Light colored inclusions do not change the basic color of the diamond and the flaws will be invisible or almost invisible when viewed without magnification.
  • Well positioned — when located on the sides or at the bottom of the diamond, inclusions can seem to be invisible or almost invisible and are difficult to notice.
  • Small — SI2 clarity diamonds typically have a few small flaws that may be spread out or clustered together in the diamond.  Very small inclusions may not “pop” to the “naked eye” and can remain almost unobserved.

“Average” SI2 Diamonds
Many SI2 diamonds are referred to as “average” SI2’s. This means the diamond has “bad” inclusions, which are distinguished flaws that are very visible.

What are the Characteristics of a “Bad” Inclusion?

  • Dark — The flaw is very noticeable and interferes with the diamond’s color and look.  These flaws can be black, gray, or another dark color.
  • Large — The flaw is very evident and “pops” immediately to the eye.  The appearance of a large inclusion can be the result of one large flaw or clusters of small flaws.
  • Badly positioned — Inclusions are considered badly located when they occur on the table (top surface of the diamond) or close to the surface on other parts of the diamond. Badly positioned inclusions appear immediately when looking at the diamond.

Examples of SI2 Clarity Diamonds

The following pictures of a variety of SI2 diamonds show the range of looks available in the SI2 clarity grade. The better ones may look like top quality (VS) diamonds, while others have the visible flaws expected in SI2 clarity diamonds.
